Inspired by Her | Yunyi Zhang of Ziraffe

by Angela Martin

Meet Yunyi Zhang of Ziraffe, an online destination for modern kids clothing and accessories. Behind Ziraffe are two moms, one based in Northern California and one in Southern California, who have been friends for years but became even closer after starting their families and bonding over the joys, challenges, and occasional chaos that is parenthood.

Yunyi and her business partner, Katie have some very important ethics that are also aligned with ours at Telegraph Ave. We couldn't be more inspired! Most importantly, they want to empower children by giving them ways to express themselves. They believe in instilling a love of craftsmanship and good design at a young age while also bringing fun and imagination into the every day. Last but not least, they believe in promoting sustainability and ethical practice in their lives and business.

Wink, wink!

1) What sparked your interest in Kids Fashion?
I have a design backfround. When my son was born, I had a difficult time finding good (organic, thoughtfully-designed, ethically-made) and interesting (fun, whimsical, unique) clothes for him. During my searches, I discovered that there's a big 'fashion world' just for kids. The rest is history.

2) What's your favorite quote/mantra that you live by?
It's really hard to narrow it down to just one. If I have to choose one, this quote by His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama comes to my mind often- "Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible."

> 3) What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your business?
Set your goals, but really focus on the present. And don't forget to cherish every step you make.

> 4) What advice would you give to aspiring women entering the industry?
It's not hard to start a business. You just have to take the step.

> 5) What the next big step for your business? What can we expect to see in the near future?
We launched Ziraffe LovedBy_Community™ in March this year. It's a platform where you can buy and sell previously loved children's clothes within a trusted community of families. It's an ongoing project - we are constantly listening to the feedback from our customers and trying to make it a better and easy-to-use platform for everyone. We are also working on some other fun projects, so stay tuned!
